Fewer people applied for unemployment benefits last week, adding to evidence that hiring will pick up this year. The number of people seeking benefits fell by 37,000 to a seasonally adjusted 404,000. The decline suggested that an unexpected rise in applications a week earlier was the result of post-holiday layoffs.

Boeing To Cut 900 Jobs In Long Beach, Calif.

Boeing sites declining orders as a reason it is cutting 900 jobs from an aircraft factory in Southern California, according to the Los Angeles Times. Those jobs are about a quarter of the workforce at the Long Beach planet, where C-17 military cargo planes are made.
